Mechanism of the human diving response
Gooden, Integrative Physiological and Behavioral Science, 1994. Facial contact with water combined with breath-holding triggers a vagal slowing of the heart rate.
The Science
Three technologies in one device: a Thermo-Cooling Facial Cold Plunge actively held at 1–4 °C, Nano-Ionic Steam and a Built-in Aromatherapy Diffuser. How each one works, and why alternating heat and cold matters.
Harmony combines three well-studied responses: warmth that softens the skin, cold water on the face that narrows surface blood vessels and triggers the mammalian dive reflex, and scent processed by the olfactory system. Below: how each system works, and what independent research does and does not show.

The Engineering Behind Harmony
Harmony brings three independent systems together in one countertop device, all run from a single front touch panel:
01 · Thermo-cooling
A thermo-cooling system that chills the water of a removable basin and holds it between 1 and 4 °C.
02 · Steam
A nano-ionic steam generator fed by its own water tank.
03 · Aromatherapy
An aromatherapy diffuser with a dedicated essential oil bottle.
Because the basin stays cold between sessions, the cold plunge is ready instantly. No ice, no app, no extra device.

0204 · Thermo-Cooling System
The Frosteam Thermo-Cooling System actively cools the water in the basin and holds it between 1 and 4 °C (34–39 °F). When the water warms above that range, cooling restarts on its own: there is no temperature to set and no ice to prepare.
Cold water on the face makes the small blood vessels of the skin narrow (vasoconstriction); when you lift your face out, circulation returns. This is what gives the visibly tighter, less puffy look right after a plunge.

0304 · Nano-Ionic Steam
Harmony's steam generator produces an ultra-fine mist at about 70 °C, much finer than the steam from a kettle or a bowl of hot water. The warm mist softens the outer layer of the skin and helps prepare it for cleansing and for the products you apply next.

0404 · Built-in Aromatherapy Diffuser
The built-in diffuser releases your essential oil from a dedicated bottle, with intensity and duration set from the front touch panel. Scent is processed by the olfactory system, which is closely linked to the brain areas involved in emotion and memory: one reason a familiar scent can make a routine feel calmer.

The Science of Contrast Therapy
Harmony's ritual alternates the two: warm nano-ionic steam first, then a short facial immersion in cold water. Plunging the face into cold water also triggers the mammalian dive reflex, a natural response in which the heart rate slows through the vagus nerve, part of the parasympathetic nervous system.

Research & Scientific Evidence
Independent studies on the mechanisms Harmony relies on, with a link to each original source. They describe general physiological responses; they are not studies of the Harmony device. Frosteam's own tests will be listed separately, clearly labelled as internal.
